So it’s been a really long time since I’ve felt totally stumped. I don’t know what to write about today. Work sucks but you don’t want to hear about that. It’s really freaking cold here, but no need to complain.
I decided to revert to my old standard random post: iPod roulette. Hit shuffle. First 10 songs. No cheating. Here goes.
1. The Believer – Chris Thile. Oh, from the awesome solo cd. Awesome mandolin player. I’ll admit I have a crush on him, but I think it’s just because he reminds me of Nathan. Such a departure from Nickel Creek and no immature compared to Punch Brothers. But I love it.
2. Shady Grove – Takenobu. We saw this cello player at Woodsongs as Nick Ogawa. Awesome cd. Young guy, classically trained, playing his own music. And an awesome version of Shady Grove. Check him out.
3. Chocolate – Snow Patrol. I love LOVE the soundtrack from The Last Kiss. I only wish I could say the same about the movie. Seriously. Can early adulthood be any more depressing? I really don’t want to hate Zach Braff, but I sure hate his character in that movie. But the soundtrack is awesome.
4. Round Here – Counting Crows. Second favorite song ever. Whenever I hear it start, I have to close my eyes, take a deep breath and get ready. I especially love the live version from one of the MTV cds – Unplugged or Live at the 10 spot or something. “Says she’s close to understanding Jesus.” Wow. What a song.
5. Seen It All Before – Amos Lee. Sigh. I love to sing along to this song. I ain’t gonna be your fool.
6. Black Rabbit – Peter Mulvey. This song is a guitar solo from a dude I was obsessed with in college. I saw him open for Dar Williams like my second week of college. I spent the next 4 years begging him via email to play in coffee houses around Louisville so I could see him. At one point, he knew my name. And he played my favorite song of his – for me! – on my birthday. To a crowd of like 50 people. But it didn’t matter. I still listen to his cds when I want to feel young and not as stressed. I love Peter.
7. Toxic – Nickel Creek. Best. Cover. Ever. Find it now. That’s all.
8. Elroy Levon’s Forever Home – Linford Detweiler. This guy is from Over the Rhine. I bought Nathan his solo cds for Christmas. And then came the new mandolin who was named after him. Nice piano music. Good choice, shuffle. Good choice.
9. Trouble – Over the Rhine. We first saw OtR at Woodsongs, and then Fat Bridesmaid went to a show with us. Awesome band. Just makes me want to close my eyes and want a nice glass of wine.
10. Nothing But the Blood – Jars of Clay. If you like hymns, you need to get the Redemption Songs cd by Jars of Clay. Old songs in a new way. Absolutely brilliant. Another great driving and singing song.
Alright. I showed you mine. Now show me yours. I know you’re out there! You show up in my stats!
Come on! De-lurk! It’s painless!
I LOVE your taste in music. It reminds me of the station I used to work at. We did a small concert with Nickel Creek (like 50 people?) … it was AMAZING! Love them. Ohhh and Counting Crows are up there in my top 5. Amos Lee maybe in my top 10. Anyway… if you can check out http://www.wfuv.org. Stream them and see if you like it! I miss working there … my taste in music has seriously gone downhill since I left!!! haha
Ahhh Trouble. That’s my second favorite OtR song (my favorite is Ohio… I can’t help it – it makes me cry).
“Your sexy cocktail hour stubble, is doin’ what it should.” Such a good line.
“Round Here” is one of my all time favorite songs. It still gives me goose-bumps. I heard it live too and it was amazing!
Krissie,
I love you even more after hearing that Round Here is your 2nd favorite song! (what’s your first?). CC are my absolute FAVORITE band. I love them so much and I love to find others that enjoy them as well! So much of their good stuff isn’t stuff that was popular. I mean, Mr. Jones was good & all… but nothing like other CC songs:)
Found your blog a few weeks back. :>) Thanks for the playlist ideas. Nice to meet you. :>)
Here’s we go…if I had done this a few days ago it would have still been all Christmas music.
1. Baltimore Clipper – Wind in the Rigging. Wind in the Rigging is the name of the album, but I don’t know the artists. It’s a CD of seafaring instrumentals. Don’t judge me.
2. Beg and Borrow – Gravity Kills. I promise I don’t really listen to this type of music anymore (much), but for some reason there was one day when I thought I needed to put all my Gravity Kills on iTunes. I actually saw them in concert in Cincinnati back in the day when I listened to loud angry guys.
3. Chief Sitting in the Rain – Yo Yo Ma, Mark O’Connor, and Edgar Meyer. Cello, fiddle, and double bass extraordinaires.
4. Roads – Blindside. One of their slower songs. No screaming here.
5. Margaritaville – The Bluegrass Band. A bluegrass tribute to Jimmy Buffett, and it works out pretty well.
6. Raptus – Mark Snow. Music from the X-Files, with dialogue and everything. For some reason they only took music from the first 3 seasons, but I’m not complaining.
7. We’ll Be Together – Sting. I like Sting. Wanna make something of it?
8. The Beekeeper – Chris Thile. This is before Thile and the guys were officially The Punch Brothers, and is a prime example of what can be done with bluegrass instruments when you don’t feel like playing bluegrass.
9. Don’t Need a Gun – Billy Idol. He was my favorite back in the 80′s, and I still need a Billy Idol fix on occasion. We saw him in concert a few years ago and were pleasantly surprised by how well it turned out.
10. Rebel Yell – Billy Idol. Hahahahaha….
