and it looks like I’m losing this fight

Okay, people. I need you to tell me I’m not dying.

So my coworkers brought in cake today. For my birthday. White cake. White icing. From the grocery store.

I have a piece. A very small piece. How small? It’s a 9 inch cake. Half of it was split into 6 slices. I had a third. So, really, like the size of one of those Little Debbie Zebra cookies with the filling in the middle. Yes, just about that size. Like 4 good-sized bites that I turned into a lot of little bites. And I even ate the end with the cake, not the end with the icing on the side.

About 10 minutes later, I start to freak out.

I realize I don’t have a typical picture for comparison (because who takes pictures when they’re not smiling?), but my lips are swelling. I can feel it from the inside. It’s like they’re getting all bumpy. Kinda feels like a million fever blisters trying to break the surface. Swelling, tingling, very uncomfortable.

There are only 2 things I can think of. Either

1) The swelling is spreading internally. Maybe my throat is also swelling and soon I’ll not be able to breathe. or

2) The swelling is swelling externally and soon I’ll look like Kath’s husband. (Sorry I don’t know how to link in a post from e-mail. Just go to katheats.comand say a prayer for poor Matt.)

Is this what happens when a girl who has eaten relatively clean for several months has a piece of storebought white cake with white icing? Will I be afraid of cake from now on?

Will I die?

Can someone calm me down a little bit?

  1. Awe, Krissie! Sounds like you had an allergy to something in that cake! But it could be all the whole, organic foods you’ve been eating all these months and your body just didn’t like all the chemicals in the store-bought cake and icing. Seriously. The preservatives may have been a total shock to your system!

    Hope it feels better!

  2. Don’t freak out! You’ll be fine. I can tell you this happens to me when I eat something really greasy. Since I started this healthy lifestyle about 11 months ago, any time I “cheat” with a cheeseburger or something similar, my heart will race and I’ll feel short of breath. I don’t really think it’s a mental thing, because I know that a cheeseburger every couple of months is not going to kill me, but I think it is something that literally happens to your body when you eat foods like that. Something about your blood vessels expanding??? I read an article about it in some health magazine. The only good thing is that it sure makes me think twice about what I’m putting in my mouth, and the effect it has on my body. Hope you are feeling better soon!

  3. Can you still breathe? Because for right now if I didn’t know what your normal lips look like, I’d say you just had really full, voluptuous lips. :) So if it is AT ALL possible, enjoy looking like Angelina for a bit?? But you’re probably too uncomfortable to enjoy it. :)

Sounds like you’re having an allergic reaction to something in that cake! I’ve never had a reaction like that, but I guess this’ll make you remember that store-bought cake isn’t that good anyway.

Hope it feels better soon! And I bet all the great stuff you’ve been ingesting lately will help your body flush it out quickly!

  4. Hmmm…could it be a dye allergy? Perhaps not if it was a white cake with all white icing. Hope you get better! I agree with the Angelina lips. Nothing like a little swelling to delurk me! It brought me out over at Kath’s too!!
