If you do not have either vegetable shortening or glycerin, you can consider softening the fondant by placing it in the microwave. You will want to first find a microwave-safe bowl to put the fondant in. From there, you will want to microwave the fondant in five-second intervals to make sure that you do not overdo it.

By kneading, stretching, squeezing, pressing, and folding will make the fondant soft again if you add some slip to it. You can use a teaspoon of glycerinfor a pound of fondant. The glycerin will help the fondant to trap some water molecules. The icing will be rehydrated making it pliable.

Long-term exposure to air causes fondant to become hard and dry. Keep your fondant soft and workable by storing it in an airtight container or tightly wrapped in a piece of plastic wrap. Because too much moisture destroys the integrity of the fondant, refrigeration and freezing is not recommended because the opening and closing of the door makes it difficult to control humidity levels inside.
